COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Drake University men's golf team carded an 11-over par 296-291 – 587 on the first day of the Missouri Tiger Invitational to sit in 12th place heading into Tuesday's final round.
Freshman
Lucas Scherf led the Bulldogs through the first two rounds after an impressive 68 in the first round, followed by a 75 in the evening to tie for 35th at 143. Scherf fired a 33 on the back nine in his opening round with three birdies to help him finish 4-under par in the opening round.
Chase Wicklund and Kyle MacDonald are both tied for 49th overall after the first day with 148s on the scorecard. Wicklund carded eight total birdies on the day for a 74-74 while MacDonald moved up 20 spots in the afternoon by going 78-70. His afternoon round featured four birdies.
Tim Lim and Tommi Avant completed the Bulldogs' scoring on the opening day as Lim went 78-72 – 150 while Avant shot a 76-76 – 152.
"We had an absolutely perfect day for golf," said Drake head coach
Matt Lewis. "It was 75-80 degrees with little to no wind. The conditions for scoring were ideal. Lucas played great in first round with 14 pars and 4 birdies. He hit the ball awesome all day, he just couldn't get the putter going. Tim and Kyle bounced back in the second round with two solid scores."
No. 35 TCU leads the field after the first day with a 267-277 – 544 with six total sub-70 rounds.
The final day at the Club at Old Hawthorne begins at 8 a.m. with one 18-hole round scheduled for the Bulldogs.
"I thought for the most part we played ok," Lewis said. "We just had too many big numbers that killed our score. This was a combination of penalties and mental mistakes. If we can clean up some of our mistakes we will score well tomorrow."
