Drake (37-14) improved to 5-0 against in-state opponents when Maddox crushed a 1-1 pitch from Iowa State (28-22) starting pitcher Emma Hylen over the left field fence. Earlier in the season, the Bulldogs swept league rival UNI and beat Iowa on April 17 at Buel Field.

It was Maddox's third home run of the season and the 16th in her career. She needs just two more to enter Drake's top 10. Maddox finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief for the win. Newman improved to 24-6 on the season behind seven strikeouts with just one hit and one walk allowed. Nicole Timmons (Davenport, Iowa) started and went 5.1 innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits and six walks with three strikeouts.

Taryn Pena (Columbia, Ill.) put the Bulldogs up early at 2-0 with a first-pitch two-run home run in the first inning. Pena's blast over the left field fence started a high-scoring night for both teams.

In the second inning, Iowa State tied the game with two runs in the second inning. The Cyclones took a 4-2 lead in the third with a two-run home run by Sydney Stites. Maddox though evened the game at 4-all with a two-run single in the bottom of the inning. Maddox ripped a single to right field that scored Mandi Roemmich (West Des Moines, Iowa) and Kennedy Frank (Chesterfield, Mo.), who both reached via singles.

The tie didn't last long as the Cyclones went ahead 5-4 with Stites RBI single in the fourth. But, Drake answered with Newman's fifth-inning RBI groundout that scored Johnson and made the score 5-5.

Over the next innings, the two teams would each put multiple runners in scoring position, but couldn't quite get the timely hit before Maddox's walk off blast.

Drake return to league action Friday when Evansville visits Buel Field for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. The teams end the regular season Saturday at 12 p.m. All four games will be streamed on ESPN+. Prior to Saturday's game, Drake will host senior day for Frank, Gabbie Jonas (Omaha, Neb.), Newman, Pena and Melissa Schlotzhauer (Pilot Grove, Mo.).
