Drake Athletics Has A Record-Setting Academic Year

Bulldogs set records in the classrom

Drake University student-athletes' competitive performances in 2018-19 were overshadowed only by their performance in the classroom.

The Bulldogs posted one of the most exceptional years ever in the classroom with numerous departmental, team and individual records set.

"I am so proud of our student-athletes for the way they represented Drake University this academic year," said Drake University director of athletics Brian Hardin. "Not only did Drake student-athletes experience unprecedented success in competition and the community this year, but their academic efforts were some of the best in Drake history."

Drake's nearly 400 student-athletes recorded a combined GPA of 3.34 to tie for the highest in Drake history while all 18 teams had spring semester, year and cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or better. Nearly 80 percent of those student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.0 or better in 2018-19.

"Much of the credit goes to our student-athletes for committing to their studies, but I also commend our coaches for identifying and mentoring student-athletes that excel in Drake's rigorous academic environment," Hardin added. "I must also recognize the incredible work performed by Stephanie Sledge and Dalton Moberly in our Student-Athlete Academic Success Services department."

Four Drake programs also recorded the highest GPA in team history as men's basketball, volleyball, women's golf and rowing all recorded their highest GPAs ever.

Individually, 19 Bulldogs achieved perfect 4.0 GPAs this past academic year.

"We are humbled to work with student-athletes that push themselves every day to pursue challenging areas of study and excel in their coursework," said Stephanie Sledge, Drake's associate athletics director for Student-Athlete Academic Success Services. "Sustained academic success is the result of hard work by the student-athletes and support of the many dedicated faculty, coaches and staff at Drake that value the student-athlete experience."

Drake's female student-athletes were particularly proficient with a combined GPA of 3.52 with each women's team earning a 3.43 or better GPA.

A total of 76 Drake student-athletes also received their degrees in 2018-19.
