Bush And Plock Lead Volleyball To Two Wins

Bulldogs defeat SDSU and EIU on final day of EIU Panther Classic

CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Drake University volleyball team won a pair of matches Saturday afternoon to close out the two-day EIU Panther Classic with a 2-1 record.

Central Iowa natives Emily Plock (Altoona, Iowa) and Haley Bush (Waukee, Iowa) led Drake as the duo combined for 69 kills in the two 3-1 wins.

Drake opened the day with a 3-1 over South Dakota State by scores of 25-14, 21-25, 25-22, 25-21. The Bulldogs closed the tournament with by handling host Eastern Illinois by set scores of 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 27-25.

In the tournament finale against EIU, Bush exploded for 26 kills on 56 attempts to pace the Bulldogs with a strong performance. Plock added 11 kills in the win and defensively Gillian Gergen (Janesville, Wis.) and Elle Tubbs (Clinton, Iowa) combined for nine blocks.

The day began with Plock notching a career-high 21 kills on 43 swings with just one error against South Dakota State. Bush aided with 11 kills as the Bulldogs hit .307 in the win.

Defensively, Drake held EIU to .157 hitting as Bush and Tubbs were each in on seven blocks to stymie the Panthers.

The Bulldogs bring their 2-1 record home next week to host the annual Drake Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Knapp Center. Drake begins action in the tournament Friday, Sept. 6, against Eastern Washington at 7 p.m. followed by Saturday matches against Milwaukee and Saint Louis.
