No. 12 Washington Pushes Past Drake Volleyball, 3-0

Bulldogs nearly force four sets against the Huskies.

The Drake University volleyball team went toe-to-toe with the No. 12 team in the nation before the University of Washington prevailed for a 3-0 win Friday evening at the Bluejay Invitational in Omaha, Neb.

The Huskies did not have an answer for Drake (5-3) freshman Haley Bush (Waukee, Iowa), who notched 18 kills on 38 attempts to lead all offensive players.

However, Washington limited Drake to just .127 hitting as a team to win the match, 25-14, 30-28, 25-19 to improve to 4-1 this season.

The Bulldogs' high point came in the second set when Washington needed an extended set to defeat the Bulldogs, 30-28. Drake led for much of the set until UW took the lead at 20-19. The squads swapped points with Drake reaching set point twice before the Huskies closed the set on a 3-0 run to take the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Drake kept some momentum in the third set, rolling out to another early lead. However, Washington answered with a 10-3 run to take firm command of the set at 17-11 en route to the 25-19 win.

Junior Kylee Macke, the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, led Drake's defensive effort with 11 digs.

Following the showdown against No. 12 Washington, Drake's weekend doesn't let up as the team continues play at the Bluejay Invitational against No. 17 Creighton at noon Saturday. The weekend concludes against Omaha at 5 p.m.
