Volleyball Closes Non-Conference Play With a 3-2 Win

Bulldogs return home Friday to start Valley play.

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Led by 18 kills from Emily Plock (Altoona, Iowa) and 46 assists from Paige Aspinwall (Maple Grove, Minn.), the Drake University volleyball team defeated North Carolina A&T, 3-2, in the Bulldogs' final non-conference match of the season.

Drake (6-7) defeated the Aggies by set scores of 25-21, 24-26, 17-25, 25-20, 15-6 in the Bulldogs' third-straight five-set match.

Plock's 18 kills came on 46 attempts to hit .283 and she added four blocks and 14 digs. In just her second match of the season, Haylee Kent (Kent, Wash.) added 14 kills while Michele Rabbitt (Canton, Ohio) had 15.

After winning the first set, 25-21, Drake held a 7-point lead late in the second half. However, N.C. A&T closed the set on a 10-1 run to claim the set, 26-24, with five Drake errors helping spur the Aggies' rally.

N.C. A&T built off that momentum and closed the third set with similar intensity, using a 9-2 run to turn a 1-point lead into a 25-17 win.

Facing a 2-1 deficit in the match, Drake never trailed in the fourth set and Plock closed the set with two kills and an ace to account for the Bulldogs' final points in the 25-20 set win to force the decisive fifth set.

Kylee Macke's (Ankeny, Iowa) serving helped Drake take a 10-3 lead in the fifth set that was never challenged as Drake took the set, 15-6, to win the match, 3-2.

Drake returns home next weekend to begin Missouri Valley Conference action with a 6 p.m. match against Indiana State Friday at the Knapp Center.
