Evansville Clips Volleyball, 3-1

Bulldogs falter in the second set in first conference loss.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Melanie Feliciano pounded out 24 kills to help Evansville defeat the Drake University volleyball team, 3-1, Saturday evening at the Knapp Center.

Drake won the first set, 25-17. However, the Purple Aces stormed back to take the next three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-15, 25-14 to leave Des Moines with their first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season.

Drake (7-8, 1-1 MVC) was led by senior Elle Tubbs (Clinton, Iowa), who posted 11 kills on 21 attempts and added two blocks. Haley Bush (Waukee, Iowa) added 17 kills, but those were tempered by 11 errors on a night in which the Bulldogs hit .146 as a team.

Gillian Gergen (Janesville, Iowa) also continued her strong play with eight kills on 20 attempts while Paige Aspinwall (Maple Grove, Minn.) posted another double-double with 41 assists and 14 digs.

In addition to Feliciano's 24 kills, Evansville (10-3, 1-1 MVC) also got 20 kills from Rachel Tam and 11 kills and 22 digs from Alondra Vazquez.

Drake hit .500 in the first set to roll to the 25-17 win behind Madi Ford's (Coralville, Iowa) serving. Drake held similar momentum early in the second set with an 18-11 lead. However, a 6-0 Evansville run that included four Drake errors pulled the Aces withing a point at 18-17. Evansville closed the set on an 8-3 run to tie the match with a 25-21 win in the set.

Those runs swayed the momentum after the break as Evansville never trailed in the third set as Drake hit -.041 and only forced a sideout on 41 percent of the Aces' serves to fall, 25-15.

Drake led early in the fourth set, but a 5-0 Evansville run, followed by a later 6-0 run, gave the Aces plenty of separation to cruise to the 25-14 win in the set and the 3-1 victory in the match.

The Bulldogs have little time to recuperate from the opening weekend of MVC play as they travel to Loyola next for a Monday evening match.
