Men’s Golf Within Striking Distance After First Day of Zach Johnson Invitational

Bulldogs close the gap in the second round to pull into contention at Glen Oaks Country Club

The Drake University men's golf team is tied for second after the first day of the Zach Johnson Invitational Monday in West Des Moines, Iowa. The Bulldogs ended the second round tied with Valparaiso and Creighton on the par-71 layout at Glen Oaks Country Club.

The three teams in the chase pack trail Loyola by just three strokes heading into Tuesday's final round, scheduled to tee off at 8:30 a.m.

The Bulldogs overcame an eight-stroke gap in the second round to draw even with the Crusaders while the Ramblers put together another strong round to climb into first place. The Bulldogs' second-round score of 300 was the third-best second-round score of the day after an opening-round 303.

Lucas Scherf fired a 148 (74-74) to lead the Bulldogs through 36 holes and finish the day in sixth. Nick Pittman finished close behind with a 150 (77-73) to finish the second round tied for eighth.

The reigning MVC Golfer of the Week, Tim Lim, totaled 153 (76-77) through 36 holes to sit in a tie for 22nd. Two strokes behind Lim was Silvester Tan who recorded a 155 (79-76) and finished the day tied for 29th.

Chase Wicklund rounded out the scorers for Drake with a 159 (76-83). Drake's two individual golfers, Shayne Patel and Kyle MacDonald finished with 36-hole totals of 164 (85-79) and 173 (89-84), respectively.
