Penn Earns Second Valley Newcomer of the Week Honor

Guard posted 21 points in the loss at Valparaiso and 10 assists in the win over Loyola

For the second time this season, Drake University guard Roman Penn has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday, Jan. 13, afternoon.

Penn, a native of Calumet City, Ind., averaged 11.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 8.5 assists on the week while shooting 45.5 percent from the field.

Playing in front of friends and family in Northwestern Indiana at Valparaiso, he scored 21 points, one shy of a career high, on 9-of-15 shooting with a season-high eight rebounds and seven assists. That performance was just the ninth by a Bulldog of 20 or more points, five or more rebounds and five or more assists since 2011. Penn has now accomplished that feat twice this season.

He began the week with 10 assists, his second-most of the second most of the season in the win over Loyola. Penn leads the Valley and ranks 23rd nationally in assists this season with 6.0 per game.

Penn and the Bulldogs return to the Knapp Center this week, where they have won 13-straight games, to host Illinois State Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
