SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Drake University men's tennis player
Oliver Johansson has been named Summit League Player of the Week following an undefeated weekend, the conference announced Tuesday.
Johansson did not drop a set while posting a 3-0 record in singles play and a 3-0 mark in doubles play over three duals this week.
"Oliver arrived to Drake earlier this month and has made an immediate impact," said Drake head coach
Davidson Kozlowski. "Not just with his contributions by going undefeated in singles and doubles during the weekend's dual matches but also with the intensity and focus he brings to each training session. Oliver is very coachable and responded extremely well for a freshman with the right adjustments during his matches."
Johansson, a freshman from Gothenburg, Sweden, made his Drake debut on Friday against Western Michigan. He teamed with
Matija Matic to claim a 6-4 win in No. 3 doubles before winning 7-6, 6-3 in No. 4 singles.
On Saturday against Northern Illinois, Johansson and Matic claimed a convincing 6-1 victory in No. 2 doubles. Johansson kept the momentum rolling with a 6-3, 6-3 win in No. 2 singles.
Johansson and Matic kept up their hot streak against Gonzaga as they prevailed, 6-2, to help Drake earn the doubles point. Johansson then capped his spotless debut weekend with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles.
Johansson and the Bulldogs travel to Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday, Jan. 25 for a trio of weekend duals. Drake takes on Arkansas at 12 p.m. and faces Middle Tennessee at 8 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, the Bulldogs square off against Wichita State at 11 a.m.
