Reigning Valley Champs To Meet Tuesday Night In The Knapp Center

Bulldogs and Ramblers to meet before a national television audience

The defending Missouri Valley Conference co-champions clash Tuesday night in the Knapp Center when the Drake University men's basketball team welcomes Loyola to campus. Tipoff between the reigning champions is set for 8 p.m. before a national television audience on CBS Sports Network.

Both teams earned matching 12-6 records a season ago to stand on top of the Valley standings. This season, Loyola is 2-0 in league play with wins over Valparaiso and Missouri State.

Drake evened its league record at 1-1 with an 80-76 win over Indiana State for the team's 12th-straight home win and fifth-straight league win in the Knapp Center. That home win-streak will be tested by a Loyola team that went 4-5 in league road games last season and is shooting more than 50 percent from the field this season.

Roman Penn leads the Bulldogs' home court hopes as the guard has averaged 16.0 points and 9.0 assists per game in his last three games while shooting 16-of-24. He ranks 39th nationally in assists. As a result of his passing, Drake has had 20 or more assists in three-straight games. During that span, 72.1 percent of the Bulldogs baskets have been assisted with the team shooting 51.2 percent.

Many of those passes have been to Liam Robbins, who has scored 78 points in his last four games, including a career-high 25 points against Mount Marty and a 21-point night at Bradley in which he was a perfect 10-of-10 from two-point range. During a span that stretched from the Air Force to Indiana State games, he made 15-straight two-point shots.

Drake's three-point shooting has also made significant strides as the team is shooting 42.5 percent from three-point range in the last three games. Newcomer Jonah Jackson has led that charge by going 13-of-29 from the arc in his previous three outings.

Following Tuesday's game, Drake returns to the road to face Valparaiso, Saturday, Jan. 11.
