The Drake University women's basketball team is set to play a seven game non-conference schedule, Suzie Glazer Burt Head Coach Jennie Baranczyk announced Thursday, Nov. 19.
"We are really excited about our non-conference schedule," Baranczyk said. "It is another year of playing incredible competition. Scheduling has always created challenges for us and this year was no exception."
Drake begins the 2020-21 season against a familiar foe, Creighton, Nov. 25. It will be the second time the longtime rivals faced each other in a season opener and first since the Bulldogs defeated the Bluejays, 62-55, at the start of the 2013-14 season. Following its trip to Omaha, Drake visits Green Bay Nov. 28.
"After the NCAA came out with recommendations and protocols due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to make a lot of adjustments to our non-conference schedule," Baranczyk said. "Our main focus was to stay as regional as possible, continue to play competitive games and keep our focus on the overall health and safety of our student-athletes."
The Bulldogs' home opener is scheduled for Dec. 2 when Iowa visits the Knapp Center. Drake faces another Big Ten opponent Dec. 6 when it travels to Minnesota. The Bulldogs host Division II, Northwest Missouri State, Dec. 10 in an exhibition contest.
Drake plays at South Dakota State Dec. 15 and finishes its non-conference slate at Iowa State Dec. 22. The Bulldogs start Missouri Valley Conference play at Bradley Dec. 31.
"Although we acknowledge that we will all need to remain flexible and our schedule may change, we couldn't be more excited about this team!" Baranczyk said.
