Men's Basketball Aims To Keep Hot Start Rolling Against Air Force

Last season, Roman Penn scored 22 points against the Falcons with 11 coming in the final nine minutes.

The Drake men's basketball team caps off its four-game homestand as Air Force comes to Des Moines Sunday, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m.

The game will be broadcast on Mediacom MC22, streamed on ESPN+ and also available on radio via ESPN 1350-AM / 102.1 -FM.

The Bulldogs enter Sunday's contest with a 5-0 record, the team's first 5-0 start since 1979-80, and have won 21-straight non-conference games at the Knapp Center.

In its last game against McKendree, Drake reached the 90-point mark for the second-consecutive game. The Bulldogs are averaging a stout 84.6 points per game and shooting 52 percent this season.

Against a Non-Division I foe, the Bulldogs again dominated both sides of the court by only allowing McKendree to shoot 38.1 percent from the field while Drake completed 61.5 percent of its shots. The Bulldogs led in almost every facet of the game with 17 and 10 margins in rebounding and assists, respectively.

In another effort with contributions from the entire roster, Shanquan Hemphill put together the best game of his Drake career. He strung together a team-high 23 points, including his first career three-pointer of the season, to go along with six rebounds and three assists. The newcomer has hit double-digit scoring numbers in all games this season and is leading the Bulldogs in scoring. Fellow newcomer Darnell Brodie is also coming off a career high after posting 10 points on perfect 5-of-5 shooting.

Roman Penn posted a 10-point, 5-assist night in that win as he remains one of the national leaders in assists with 6.4 per game and an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.6.

Air Force travels to Des Moines with a 2-1 record to open the season. Most recently, Air Force beat Lamar Dec. 5, 59-44. Chris Joyce led the Falcons in that win by contributing 23 points, five rebounds and three assists.

The two teams met last year at Air Force with Drake earning a thrilling 85-80 victory to improve to 7-0 all-time against the Falcons. The game served as Roman Penn's coming out part as he scored 22 points, including 11 in the final nine minutes to lead the Bulldogs to the road win.

Following Sunday's game, the Bulldogs leave Des Moines for the first time since the opening week of the season when they travel to South Dakota Wednesday, Dec. 16 for a 6 p.m. contest.
