Men's Basketball Matches Best Start in Program History

The Bulldogs improved to 8-0, with all eight victories by double figures, and topped the century mark for the first time since putting up 111 points in a double-overtime battle with San Diego on Dec. 23, 2018.

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake University men's basketball team matched the best start in school history Sunday, riding the strong inside play of Shanquan Hemphill and Darnell Brodie to a 111-67 victory over Chicago State at the Knapp Center.

The Bulldogs improved to 8-0, with all eight victories by double figures, and topped the century mark for the first time since putting up 111 points in a double-overtime battle with San Diego on Dec. 23, 2018. The last time Drake reached triple figures in regulation, the Bulldogs scored 101 against Coe on Nov. 11, 2017.

"I thought we really shared the ball well, especially in the second half," said Drake head coach Darian DeVries. "I thought overall our guys came out, were pretty sharp and did a lot of things we wanted to do and we worked on a few things with changing defenses. Moving to 8-0 is a good feeling."

Hemphill, a 6-foot-6 senior, and the 6-foot-10 Brodie had their way around the basket against the shorter Cougars, who fell to 0-9. Hemphill scored 21 points on 9-for-10 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Brodie went 7-for-8 from the field in scoring 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds to match his career high.

D.J. Wilkins, continuing his torrid shooting of late, also scored 14 points. He knocked down 5 of 8 shots, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range. In his last three games, Wilkins is 16-for-28 from the field, including 13-for-23 from 3-point range.

"D.J. and Tank [Hemphill] – and all the guys – but specifically DJ, his confidence is through the roof," DeVries said. "He's shooting it at such a high level that really changes things for us and opens up the floor."

Point guard Roman Penn turned in another solid game, scoring 12 points, handing out seven assists and making three steals. He went 5-for-7 from the field. Jonah Jackson contributed 11 points off the bench with three 3-pointers and Tremell Murphy just missed double figures with his nine points, which included a couple of impressive dunks.

All told, the Bulldogs shot 60.5 percent from the field, outrebounded the Cougars 47-22 and piled up an overwhelming 66-28 edge in points in the paint.

Levelle Zeigler scored 18 points to lead Chicago State, which has yet to play a home game. Carlo Marble, who played at West Des Moines Valley High School, had seven points and four rebounds for the Cougars.

Drake started slowly and led just 10-7 shortly after the first media timeout. But a 13-3 run in which five different players scored created some separation and three highlight-reel lob passes from Penn really loosened things up.

Hemphill and Murphy both dunked off lobs from Penn and Nate Ferguson dropped in a basket on another perfectly timed lob. Murphy also drove the baseline for an emphatic dunk as the Bulldogs built a 47-29 halftime lead.

Drake then hit 11 of its first 13 shots in the second half to open a 72-43 lead with 13:27 left, putting the Bulldogs well on their way to 100. Sunday's total was the most Drake had scored against a Division I opponent in regulation since getting 112 against West Texas State on Jan. 22, 1980.

The Bulldogs came in averaging 82.7 points a game and now have scored at least 80 six times.

Drake's only other 8-0 start came in the 1970-71 season.

The Bulldogs will go after victory No. 9 against North Dakota on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Knapp Center, their final non-conference game. Missouri Valley Conference play starts Sunday, Dec. 27 at Indiana State.
