Women’s Basketball Closes Non-Conference Slate at Iowa State Tuesday

The in-state game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

AMES, Iowa – The Drake University women's basketball team closes its challenging non-conference schedule at Iowa State Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. The in-state game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

Drake (2-4), which has played five of its six games on the road, is coming off a hard-fought loss at No. 22 Texas on Friday. The game with Longhorns was scheduled just days before the meeting in Austin and was the first time the teams played in nearly 37 years. The Bulldogs will have played consecutive Big 12 opponents for the first time since 2000 when it played the Cyclones and then Kansas State.

A pair of Bulldogs had career games against Texas as senior Maddie Monahan with 28 points on 11-of-15 shooting with a career-high four three-pointers and Allie Wooldridge with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting each set new career scoring highs behind career shooting performances. Wooldridge grabbed a career-best 11 rebounds to tally the first double-double of her career, in addition to contributing a career-tying six assists.

Monahan has been a consistent standout through the team's challenging non-conference slate. Monahan, who is averaging a career-best 18.7 points per game (3rd in MVC), recorded her first-ever back-to-back 20-plus games last week with the other at South Dakota State. She has scored 10 or more points in 10-straight games dating back to the end of the 2019-20 season. Monahan is shooting a career-high 57.5 percent from the floor, which ranks second in the league, while her 3.7 assists per game is sixth. Wooldridge moved into the starting five against Iowa and has started every game since. She averages career-highs of 6.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

Iowa State (5-3, 2-0 Big 12) has won three-straight games, including getting its second Big 12 win by beating Kansas State in its last game. The Cyclones are led in scoring by Ashley Joens who averages a league-leading 27.0 points per game. Iowa State owns a narrow advantage in the all-time series at 30-29 as the home team has won each of the past five matchups.

Drake starts Missouri Valley Conference play at home on New Year's Day (Jan. 1) versus Bradley. Tipoff with the Braves is set for 2 p.m.
