Women’s Basketball Drops Final Non-Conference Game at Iowa State, 85-67

Drake (2-5), which played six of its seven non-conference games away from the Knapp Center, was led by Kierra Collier’s 14 points and Grace Berg who scored 13 points.

Box Score AMES, Iowa – The Drake University women's basketball team dropped its final non-conference game at Iowa State, 85-67, Tuesday night inside Hilton Coliseum.

Drake (2-5), which played six of its seven non-conference games away from the Knapp Center, was led by Kierra Collier's 14 points and Grace Berg who scored 13 points. Sophomore Maggie Bair continued her strong play off the bench with her second double-double in the past three games with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor McAulay scored a career-high eight points off the bench while Monica Burich had nine points.

Emily Ryan scored a game-high 20 points for Iowa State (6-3), which made 17 three-pointers, one away from a school record. The Cyclones finished at 51.5 percent from deep and 44.6 percent from the floor. Four others scored double figures for Iowa State, including Ashley Joens (17), Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw (14) and Kristin Scott and Madison Wise each with 13.

After falling behind 7-0 at the start of the game, Drake pulled within one point at 9-8 when Maggie Negaard made a three-pointer at the 6:01 mark of the first quarter. But Drake's shooting went cold again as Iowa State heated up to help build a double-digit lead after one quarter at 30-19 and at the halftime break, 54-34.

The tough shooting continued in the third quarter for the Bulldogs who managed just eight points on 3-of-15 shooting in the quarter. However, Drake found its touch in the final period making 9-of-18 (50.0 percent) from the field and 4-of-8 from deep. But the margin was too great as Iowa State kept it double-figures on the way to the win. The home team has now won each of the past six matchups between the schools.

In the first two quarters, the Cyclones shot 61.3 percent from the floor and 68.8 percent from deep with 11 three-pointers. The Bulldogs struggled shooting at just 34.2 percent from the floor and 27.8 percent from three, and made just 2-of-13 to close the second quarter. Bair had a team-high 10 points and four rebounds at halftime. Despite foul trouble, Berg had nine points while Burich made two three-pointers for six points.

Drake starts Missouri Valley Conference action New Year's Day when Bradley visits the Knapp Center for a 2 p.m. game.
