ST. LOUIS – Drake University senior forward Shanquan Hemphill has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday, Dec. 23. The honor is the second of the season for the Gary, Ind. native.
 
This week's Valley awards include games played Dec. 14-22.
 
Hemphill, a transfer from Green Bay, led Drake on the week with 17.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while shooting 72.4 percent (21-of-29).
 
Against Chicago State, he led Drake with 21 points, his second most the season, on 9-of-10 shooting  with six rebounds. He closed the week with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting and four steals against North Dakota.
 
In the Bulldogs' road win at South Dakota, he had 12 points in 21 minutes.
 
He has scored in double-figures in 8-of-9 games this season with two 20-point games and was previously named the Valley Newcomver of the Week Dec. 14.
 
Hemphill and the Bulldogs begin conference play next with a two-game series at Indiana State Dec. 27-28. The Bulldogs enter the conference season with a 9-0 record, the best start to a season in program history.
