PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Drake University softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday at the Stanford Invitational.
Drake (4-4) lost to Hofstra (1-1) by a score of 5-3 in a rematch from Friday and then lost to the host school to Stanford (9-2) by score of 8-4.
The Bulldogs will have another shot at both teams Sunday starting at 11 a.m. CST against the Pride and immediately after will face the Cardinal.
Against Hofstra,
Sarah Maddox put Drake up 2-0 in its first at-bat with a two-run home run that followed a triple by
Libby Ryan. The Pride tied the game in the fourth pushing two runs across off freshman
Allie Timmons.
Mandi Roemmich's double in the fifth briefly gave the Bulldogs the lead back at 3-2. However, Hofstra scored three runs in the bottom of the inning as freshman Makenzie Hupke replaced Timmons.
Timmons (0-1) took her first career loss after giving up four earned runs on five hits with one walk and one wild pitch.
Hupke started against Stanford and struggled in the first inning. The Cardinal scored three runs before recording an out and finished with five runs in the frame.
Drake pulled within one run at 5-4 in the sixth after
Macy Johnson drew a bases loaded walk and Ryan was hit by a pitch during the next at bat that scored its final run. Maddox drove in the Bulldogs' first two runs with RBI singles in the third and fifth.
Stanford tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. Both runs came off
Nicole Timmons, who had entered the game after Hupke issued a leadoff walk.
Hupke (0-2) earned the loss after allowing six earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts but issued four walks.
