DES MOINES – The Drake University women's tennis team earned its third-straight dual victory with a 6-1 win over North Dakota (3-4) on Friday afternoon at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
Drake (5-4) began the dual on the right foot by making quick work of the doubles point.
Joely Lomas/Liza Petushkova used a 6-1 win at No. 1 to notch their fifth-straight win and improve their mark to 6-1 together this season, and Kendall Hunt/Megan Webb followed up with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 shortly after. Maria Tatarnikova/Daria Walczak lost at No. 2, 6-4.
Lomas, who made her season debut at No. 2, put the finishing touches on her impressive outing by steamrolling her way to a 6-2, 6-1 win to open singles play.
Petushkova continued her run of strong play with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1 to push the Bulldogs' lead to 3-0. The junior from Moscow, Russia, has won four singles matches in a row.
Drake clinched the dual in a flurry of singles matches concluding at the same time. As Tatarnikova closed out a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3, Carmen Palumbo finished up a 6-3, 6-0 result at No. 4 as Drake's advantage swelled to an insurmountable 5-0.
Webb fell 3-6, 0-6 on Court 6 as the Fighting Hawks got themselves on the scoreboard.
On Court 5, Walczak overcame a 5-4 deficit to take the first set, 7-5. After claiming the first game of the second set, Walczak dropped the next six to push the match into a 10-point tiebreaker. Walczak outlasted her opponent, 10-4, in a marathon set featuring numerous long rallies.
Drake will aim for its fourth-straight win when it hosts Kansas City on Sunday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. The action is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
