HOPEWELL, N.J. -- Her Hoop Stats announced Tuesday, Feb. 4 that redshirt senior Sara Rhine of the Drake University women's basketball team has been named a semifinalist for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award. Rhine is one of 10 players named to the list of semifinalists for the inaugural award.
The Becky Hammon Award presented by Her Hoop Stats is awarded to the nation's top player in any of the 25 mid-major conferences. Rhine was previously named to the early-season watch list along with teammate Becca Hittner.
Rhine, who recently eclipsed 2,000 career points, is one of the nation's most efficient scorers and ranks eighth in the nation in field goal percentage at 65.9 percent against Division I opponents. This season the 6-foot-1 forward has shot an incredible 71.4 percent from two-point range which ranks third in the nation.
Hammon was a three-time All-American during her career at Colorado State and led the Rams to the Sweet 16 in 1999, the program's only appearance to this day. In 2016 she was named one of the top 20 players in WNBA history. Hammon was the second female coach in NBA history when she began coaching for the San Antonio Spurs in 2014.
"I think it's awesome to recognize players who maybe don't have the glitz and glamour or privilege of being on national TV, but are doing great things on their journey through college hoops," said Coach Hammon about the award.
The 10 semifinalists will be narrowed down to five finalists on Monday, March 9. Each of the finalists will be considered for the 2020 Becky Hammon Award presented by Her Hoop Stats, and the winner will be announced on Wednesday, April 1.
Rhine and the Bulldogs continue their four-game homestand with games against SIU on Friday at 6 p.m. and Missouri State on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+
