Softball Shuts Out South Dakota To Open 2020 Season

Timmons surrenders just one hit in seven innings.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Drake University softball team scored two runs in the first inning to cruise to a 4-0 victory over South Dakota in the 2020 season opener Friday night at the Doc Halverson Dome Classic.

Macy Johnson led Drake at the plate with a 2-for-3 night with an RBI and two runs scored. Mandi Roemmich went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run at the top of the lineup.

In the circle, Nicole Timmons pitched the shutout and gave up just one hit and two walks while striking out 14 of the 24 batters she faced in the complete game. Timmons pitched nearly six hitless innings until South Dakota's Camille Fowler earned an infield single on a 2-2 count in the sixth inning. Fowler advanced on a wild pitch and was the only Coyote baserunner in scoring position all evening.

Drake took a 2-0 lead before USD recorded an out when Roemmich led off the game with a single to left field, followed by a Johnson double to center field the scored Roemmich from first base. After a hit-by-pitch and wild pitch advanced Johnson to third base, a Sarah Maddox sacrifice fly scored Johnson.

The Bulldogs added a third run the following inning when Abby Buie singled, stole second, and then scored when Roemmich belted an RBI single on an 0-2 count. Drake tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning when Libby Ryan lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Johnson. Johnson reached base on a leadoff bunt single, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error on the steal attempt. That error was one of three committed by USD.

The Bulldogs continue play at the Doc Halverson Dome Classic, hosted by UNI at the UNI-Dome, Saturday with a pair of games. The day begins at 2:45 p.m. against DePaul, followed by a 7:15 p.m. contest against Murray State.
