The Drake University women's basketball team was having another outstanding season in 2019-20 before it came to an abrupt and heartbreaking end due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States. The team was en route to Moline, Ill., Thursday, March 12 when the Missouri Valley Conference announced its tournament, scheduled to start that night, was canceled. Later that day, the NCAA announced that the NCAA Basketball Tournaments were also canceled and the season over for the Bulldogs and everyone else.
Drake, which recorded its sixth-straight 20-win season tying a school and MVC record, was the No. 2 seed in the MVC Tournament in Moline. It marked the sixth-straight season Drake finished in the top two of the regular season standings. The Bulldogs were projected to make the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-straight season. Four-straight NCAA Tournaments would have been a first in program history. Drake again played one of the nation's toughest schedules finishing with an RPI of 25. The Bulldogs beat a pair of Power Five opponents in Iowa State and Auburn and tallied double-digit league wins for the sixth consecutive season with 14.
Several additional team accomplishments occurred for the program.
- Drake was one of three teams nationally ranking in the Top 10 in assists per game (21.2), field-goal percentage (48.1) and scoring offense (82.6). The Bulldogs were joined by No. 2 Baylor and No. 3 Oregon in the exclusive club (AP Rank).
- Drake's assists per game total ranked second nationally behind Baylor while its scoring average ranked fifth. Drake is the only team in the country to rank in the top three of assists per game each of the past four seasons.
- The Bulldogs have led The Valley in scoring each of the past six seasons, becoming the first men's or women's basketball team to lead the league six-straight seasons. They have also been the leader in the MVC in assists per game and field goal percentage each of the past six seasons.
- The program paced the MVC in attendance for the fourth-straight season with 3,523 fans per game at the Knapp Center.
Many individual accomplishments happened led by the senior trio of
Becca Hittner,
Sara Rhine and
Brenni Rose. The trio won 103 games the past four seasons, helped Drake win five MVC titles, including three consecutive MVC regular-season titles and make three-straight NCAA Tournaments. The three successive NCAA Tournament trips marked just the second time it happened in school history. In addition, the three were part of the program doing more than 10,000 community service hours in the Drake and Des Moines communities during their careers.
- Hittner was named the MVC Jackie Stiles Player of the Year for the third-straight year. She is just the third MVC player to win the top player award, joining Stiles at Missouri State (1999, 2000, 2001) and Kristi Cirone at Illinois State (2007, 2008, 2009).
- Hittner collected WBCA All-America Honorable Mention honors for the second consecutive year becoming the first Drake player to earn multiple WBCA All-American honors.
- Hittner and Rhine each surpassed 2,000 career points during the season. It marked the first time in MVC history (men's or women's basketball) a pair of teammates accomplished the impressive feat together in the same season. Hittner and Rhine joined the Oregon tandem of Sabrina Ionescu and Ruthy Hebard as the only teammates in 2019-20 who each scored 2,000 career points.
- Hittner and Rhine also achieved great academic success for the second-straight season. Rhine was tabbed to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team for the second consecutive year while Hittner was picked to the Academic All-America Second Team after third team honors a year ago. It marked the second consecutive season Drake was the only Division I women's basketball program with two academic all-Americans.
- Rhine was tabbed the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the third time, becoming the first MVC women's basketball student-athlete to win the top academic award three times. The pair also were named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team for the third-straight season. Junior Maddie Monahan earned her first MVC Scholar-Athlete honors being named to the second team. Monahan, who has started 96 straight games, averaged a career-best 8.8 points and 4.2 assists per game.
- Hittner and Rhine were each selected to the All-MVC First Team for the third-straight season. Hittner is just the fourth Drake and eighth MVC player to be on the first team four times. Rhine is just one three Bulldogs to be on the first time three times.
- Hittner led the MVC in scoring for third-straight season with a 18.9 clip while Rhine was the top shooter in field goal percentage for the third-straight time with a 65.0 percent mark. Rose paced the MVC in assists with 144 and assists per game at 4.8. Both totals were career highs.
- Hittner and Rhine were each picked MVC Player of the Week two times during the 2019-2020 season while redshirt sophomore Kierra Collier was picked MVC Newcomer of the Week once. Collier averaged 8.9 points per game in her first season as a Bulldog.
