Sturtz Named To MVC Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete Team

Sophomore earned MVC All-Bench honors earlier in the week.

Drake University sophomore Garrett Sturtz has been named to the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete Team, the league announced Thursday, March 5.

Sturtz, who earned a spot on the second team, was one of 15 student-athletes honored by the league for their work on the court and in the classroom.

Sturtz's most recent accolade comes a day after he was named to the MVC All-Bench Team.

The sophomore from Newton, Iowa, averaged 8.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in league play. Over the entire season, he was second on the team and 10th in the league in rebounding with 5.7 boards per game.

He is shooting 65.6 percent from the field this year and 36.4 percent from three-point range. In his last 12 games of the season, he shot 77.6 percent and has not missed more than two shots in a game since Jan. 19.

He scored in double figures in eight of the 18 MVC games including a career-high 18 points in Drake's home win over SIU and 17 points in the road loss at Loyola in which he became one of just 26 players in the nation to record 17 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks or more in a game this season.

In the classroom, he owns a 3.39 grade point average as a marketing major in Drake's College of Business and Public Administration.

To be eligible for selection to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team, student-athletes must own at least a 3.20 or better GPA and have reached at least sophomore standing academically and athletically.

Sturtz continues Drake's tradition of being among the league leaders in Scholar-Athlete Team selections. In the last five years, Sturtz is one of 12 to earn MVC Scholar-Athlete honors. Drake has also won four of the last five MVC Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. UNI's A.J. Green earned the award this year, breaking Drake's four-year stranglehold on the award.

Sturtz and the Bulldogs are in action Thursday night when he leads the Bulldogs into the opening round of the MVC Tournament. The eighth-seeded Bulldogs take on No. 9 Illinois State at 6 p.m. in St. Louis' Enterprise Center.
