LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas City rallied for an 8-7 win over the Drake University softball team Sunday in the team's final game at the Rock Chalk Challenge.
For the second-straight game, Drake (8-16) lost a lead in the seventh inning as the Roos scored two runs trailing 7-6 going into their final at bat in the top of the frame.
Kansas City loaded the bases with zero outs before Alexi D'Ambrosio singled up the middle off
Mackenzie Hupke. Hupke limited the damage by striking out the next three Roos. She allowed a leadoff walk, a double and another walk before D'Ambrosio's single.
The Bulldogs mounted a comeback attempt in their last at bat in the bottom of the inning.
Mandi Roemmich drew a one walk and two batters later moved to second after
Kristen Arias walked. However,
Delaney Taylor's groundout to the shortstop ended the game.
After falling behind 5-2 in the top of the third, Drake tied the game with Arias' two-run, fourth-inning home run. Kansas City briefly took the lead back at 6-5 in the fifth, but Roemmich's triple scored
Aubree Beitzinger and Taylor's fielders choice scored Roemmich to give the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead after five innings.
Hupke earned the loss after pitching seven innings. She allowed eight runs on six hits and struggled with her command with eight walks and three wild pitches. Hupke struck out a career-high seven batters.
Macy Johnson led Drake's offense with a 3-for-5 performance and included two stolen bases and two runs.
Laura Anderson, Beitzinger and Roemmich each had two hits. Arias drove in a pair of runs and took two walks.
Drake starts Missouri Valley Conference play at Indiana State March 14-15 in Terre Haute, Ind.
