IRVING, Texas – Four members of the Drake University football team have been named to the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society, the organization announced on Wednesday, April 15.
Devin Cates,
Steven Doran,
Isaiah Kent-Schneider and
Jacob Mury were selected to the prestigious group that is comprised of college football student-athletes from all divisions that have maintained a 3.2 or higher grade point average throughout their collegiate careers.
In addition to maintaining a level of academic excellence, a honoree must have been a starter or significant contributor and met all NCAA-mandated progress towards a degree for inclusion in the Hampshire Society. The group is comprised entirely of student-athletes that have met those requirements and exhausted their eligibility or retired from football.
"We are pleased to honor another impressive group of athletes as part of this year's Hampshire Honor Society," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "For more than a decade, the Hampshire Honor Society has served as a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these young men for their commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives."
The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF's National Scholar-Athlete program by greatly expanding the number of scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year. The program further strengthens the organization's leadership role in encouraging academic performance by the student-athletes at the 775 colleges and universities with football programs nationwide. The initiative has now honored 12,146 student-athletes since its inception. An impressive 1,451 players from 365 schools qualified for membership in the Society's 14th year.
Cates, a tight end/wide receiver, led the team in receptions (51), yards (627) and receiving touchdowns (9), including catching a touchdown in eight straight games to end the 2019 season. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology with a 3.55 GPA. Cates was chosen to the 2019 All-Pioneer Football League First Team and to the All-PFL Academic Second Team.
Doran, a wide receiver from Germantown, Wis., battled injury in his final season but still had 12 catches for 195 yards and one touchdown. He graduated with dual degrees in astronomy and physics with a 3.53 GPA. Doran was a two-time All-PFL Second Team selection, a two-time All-PFL Academic First Team honoree and a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District nominee.
Kent-Schneider started 10 games on the offensive line. He graduated with degrees in environmental science and secondary education. Kent-Schneider is enrolled in Drake's STEM education master's program and holds a 3.98 GPA.
