Get to Know - Kirk Wherritt

The third-year Drake football coach takes over as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach going into the 2020 season.

What made you decide to get into coaching?

Coach Wherritt: I started coaching right after graduated high school because of a love for the game. When I was coaching youth flag football in Milwaukee I saw how impactful coaching can be in the lives of young men.

How would you describe your coaching style and philosophy?

Coach Wherritt: I try to coach from a standpoint of love. Love for the game, the competition and most importantly the players and coaches. Hopefully the decisions I make come from a standpoint of love. I believe "how" you do things is more important than "what" you do.

Who or what has influenced you to become the coach you are today?

Coach Wherritt: I've had so many incredible people in my life that have influenced me as a coach. But nothing has been more influential in my life than Jesus Christ.

What attracted you to Drake?

Coach Wherritt: I've learned so much from my previous 16 years of coaching so I felt I knew quite specifically what I was looking for. What I saw in Drake was an incredible academic reputation, a rich football tradition and a president and administration that saw the value of college football.

What are you most excited for in your new position as offensive coordinator and now working with quarterbacks after two seasons with running backs?

Coach Wherritt: I loved coaching the running backs. There was something special in the relationships of our group. I've coached/played quarterback for most of my career so it feels like home. It's a privilege to be able to invest in the hearts of our quarterbacks. I'm honored to be able to work with an incredible staff. The four assistants on offense are all dynamic people and leaders.  Each one brings a wealth of knowledge and burning desire to be great. I believe the more we can creatively work together and learn from one another will bring out the best in the Bulldogs' offense.

What are some similarities and differences between you and head coach Todd Stepsis?

Coach Wherritt: I think maybe the most important similarity is how we view people. Relationships matter deeply to both of us. I love the energy and positivity that coach Stepsis brings to the program.  Hopefully I bring some of my own. Maybe our biggest difference is that coach is much more physically active than me, he is a machine.

What adjustments have you made as a coach during the COVID-19 situation?

Coach Wherritt: I've had to do everything online. Maybe the most important job is to encourage and stay connected to our guys through technology.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Coach Wherritt: I like to play board games with my family and on my own oil painting.  I try to do my best Bob Ross impersonation.

What do you enjoy most about being a part of the Drake football program?

Coach Wherritt: People matter. It's so much bigger than football and school. I get to invest heavily in the lives of our guys and influence the men they're becoming. Drake is a special place with special people.
