The Drake University men's and women's tennis teams had the remainder of their 2020 spring season canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States. The men's team competed in 20 dual matches on the season while the women's team competed in 10 dual matches before the seasons were canceled just before their spring break trips.
With the cancellation of the spring season, the final season of Drake's three seniors came to an abrupt end. Below are those three seniors who were set to cap tremendous athletic careers at Drake.
Barny Thorold, the lone senior on the Drake University men's tennis team, saw his final season cut short due to COVID-19. Thorold boasts numerous accomplishments as a Bulldog despite his career ending prematurely.
A Loughborough, England, native, Thorold accumulated 34 singles wins and 48 doubles victories in his four-year run with the Bulldogs. In that span, he helped Drake to three conference championships and three NCAA Tournament berths. The Bulldogs compiled 59 dual wins over the course of Thorold's career.
Thorold enjoyed his best season as a sophomore, earning All-Summit League honors after posting career-highs with 13 singles wins and 19 doubles wins.
The Drake University women's tennis team features a pair of Bulldogs who recently completed their final season. Over the last four years, senior
Sophia Haleas and redshirt senior
Joely Lomas guided Drake to 39 dual victories and the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championship.
Haleas, from Clarendon Hills, Ill., joined Drake as a junior in 2018-19 after spending two seasons at Utah State. She posted four doubles wins in her debut year with the Bulldogs, and she added 11 singles victories to her resume, including a perfect 6-0 mark at the No. 2 spot.
As a senior, Haleas claimed the MVC Flight No. 4 Singles title by defeating Kristine Theys of Stony Brook, 7-5, 6-2.
A native of Swansea, Wales, Lomas made an immediate impact as a freshman by recording 12 singles wins to go along with a team-best 16 doubles victories in dual play. She built on her strong play as a sophomore, leading Drake with 20 singles wins and 15 doubles wins. She prevailed in 12 doubles matches during dual play, the most of any Bulldog that season. Lomas also earned a victory at the ITA Central Region championships.
Lomas was poised for another strong season as a junior, winning the MVC's Flight No. 3 singles and doubles championships in the fall. She earned 11 singles wins and 17 doubles wins before missing the final month of the season due to injury. Lomas redshirted the following season, 2018-19, because of injury, but returned in a big way for the 2019-20 campaign.
Lomas and her doubles partner,
Liza Petushkova, finished the dual season 7-1 together and earned MVC Doubles Team of the Week four times. The pair ascended to the No. 71 ranking in the final ITA Rankings of the season.
