Drake Athletics Posts Record-Setting Academic Semester

Bulldog student-athletes posted a department GPA of 3.68 during the spring semester.

Starting in March, the ripple effects of the COVID-19 global pandemic began to affect Drake student-athletes, not only with the cancellation of sport seasons but with the disruption of traditional classes in the final two months of the spring semester.

Despite the challenges and adversity presented by virtual courses and assignments completed off-campus, Drake student-athletes turned in one of the finest academic semesters in department history.

Sixteen of Drake's 18 teams recorded their highest GPAs in program history during the spring semester. As a department, the Bulldogs boasted a 3.68 GPA during the spring semester and 17 teams recorded a team GPA of 3.5 or better for the semester.

Thirty-two percent of Drake student-athletes (105 total) posted perfect 4.0 GPAs during the spring semester and 90 percent of Drake's nearly 400 student-athletes had a 3.0 or better GPA.

Two teams, women's golf and women's tennis nearly posted team GPAs of 4.0 as women's tennis recorded a team GPA of 3.95 in the spring while women's golf had a team GPA of 3.97.

Women's golf's outstanding semester in the classroom marked the sixth-consecutive semester the program has had a team GPA of 3.5 or higher while women's tennis did so for the fifth-consecutive semester. Women's basketball also recorded its sixth-straight semester with a team GPA of 3.5 or better.

The semester culminated with 64 student-athletes receiving their Drake diplomas, marking 75 total student-athletes who graduated in 2019-20.
