The Drake University men's soccer team fell to Loyola, 3-0, in double-overtime Saturday evening at Cownie Soccer Complex.
The Ramblers out-shot the Bulldogs 24-9 throughout the match.
Loyola attempted two shots within the first five minute of the match, but were unable to get past the Bulldogs defense.
In the 23rd minute,
Juan Louis and
Jaffer Murphy both attempted to get the Bulldogs on the board. Louis shot went wide and Murphy's was blocked by a Rambler defender.
Louis ended the match with three shots and one on goal.
In the final seconds of the first half, Billy Hency scored for the Ramblers after receiving a pass from Oscar Dueso to put Loyola up 1-0.
"The result is tough to accept for a number of reason, but mainly because we know the goals are preventable. To gift them a goal in the final seconds of the first half shifted the dynamic of what was a very competitive first half game," said head coach
Gareth Smith.
Loyola created two scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but both were called offsides.
Senior
Bradan Allen attempted to put the Bulldogs on the board in the 60th minute, but the shot went wide resulting in a Loyola goal kick.
Allen added two shots and one on goal for Drake.
Less than two minutes later, Fabian Becerra found the net behind Drake keeper
Jared Brown, to put the Ramblers up 2-0.
Brown ended the match with three saves after facing 24 shots.
Becerra found the goal again in the 83rd minute after receiving a pass from Hency, putting the Ramblers up 3-0.
Out of the 24 shots taken by Loyola the Bulldogs blocked 10 shots, many being back to back.
Smith said, "Overall we were well organized and battled well but were let down by poor individual defending or by over playing in areas of the field that are congested. We also need to improve oír ability to retain possession in attack, especially our link up play. We have to mature and learn how to manage specific situations and recognize the risk rewards of decisions we make in key moments of the game. We learn and move forward as we prepare for MSU."
The Bulldogs remain in Des Moines to take on Missouri State on Wednesday Oct. 27.
