Women's Basketball Tops Mavericks, 83-58

The Drake University women's basketball team played its final exhibition game against Minnesota State Saturday afternoon in the Knapp Center. The Bulldogs topped the Mavericks 83-58.

The game was one of agility, covering all areas of the court. Both teams demonstrated their athleticism consistently throughout the game. From the beginning, the Bulldogs pushed the lead.

The first quarter the Bulldogs led, with Maggie Bair winning the tip and then scoring the first two points of the game.

The Bulldogs struggled to score in the beginning of the second quarter, after a minor brake due to technical difficulties. The Mavericks went on a 4-0 run during the first three minutes of the quarter.

With 7:23 left in the first half, Katie Dinnebier was fouled and sent to the free throw line. She made both and minimized the Mavericks lead to only two points.

Dinnebier led the Bulldogs with 21 points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals. She shot 100 percent from the free throw line and 50 percent or higher in the other areas of the court.

Freshman Courtney Becker led the Bulldogs with nine rebounds, six of which came from the defensive side of the ball. She also added four points and shot 100% from the free throw line.

Sophomore Courtney Becker finished the game with an impressive total of nine rebounds.

Graduate Maddie Petersen led Drake with nine assists to set a new career high.

Redshirt-junior Grace Berg added 12 points, junior Megan Meyer added 10, and junior Maggie Bair added nine for Drake.

The Bulldogs head into the 2021-2022 season as they play their home opener on Wednesday Nov. 9 against Creighton. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+
