Drake vs. Coe -- Postgame Notes Nov. 09

GAME NOTES
​​Drake improved its record to 76-40, while winning its sixth straight season opener.

  • Drake has won 33 of its last 36 games in the Knapp Center, including 25 straight non conference home games dating back to 2016.
  • Drake has gone 53-8 at home since 2017—the second best home record in the Valley.
  • Drake improved its record under head coach Darian DeVries to 31-0 when scoring 80 or more points.
  • Drake hit 52.7 percent from the floor, making 29 of 55 shots.
  • The Bulldogs made 12 three-point baskets, including three in the opening 2:38 of the second half.  Drake made 10-plus three-point baskets in six games, going 6-0 when that feat occurred.
  • Drake outrebounded Coe, 34-28.
  • Drake collected 13 steals. The Bulldogs had 10 or more steals in five games last season.
  • Twelve players appeared in the game with 11 scoring. 
 
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
  • Freshman reserve Tucker DeVries and senior Tremell Murphy scored 14 points apiece to pace a balanced attack for Drake. Guards DJ Wilkins and Roman Penn added 11 points apiece. 
  • Roman Penn dished out a four assists, pushing his career total to 327 which ranks No. 5 on the school career assist list.
  • DJ Wilkins had five assists—one shy of his career high six set twice last season.
  • FreshmanTucker DeVries, son of Drake coach Darrian DeVries, added six rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots  in 14 minutes off the bench. 
  • DeVries made his first collegiate basket on a layup with 14:57 left in the first half off a pass from Roman Penn. He added a free throw to complete the three-point play while igniting a 18-0 run that allowed Drake to turn a 10-7 deficit into a 25-10 lead that  the Bulldogs never relinquished.  DeVries scored five points while collecting two rebounds and one assist during that flurry.
  • Reserve guard Ayo Akinwole, a grad transfer from Omaha, scored eight points in his Drake debut.
  • Tremell Murphy led Drake with eight rebounds followed by seven from Garrett Sturtz.
  • Guard Roman Penn, who missed the last seven games of the 2020-21 season because of a left foot injury, returned to the starting lineup collecting a game high three steals while sinking all six free throw attempts. Penn, who wore #12 on his jersey last year, switch to #1 this season.
 
SERIES NOTES
  • Drake won its fourth straight game against Coe, pushing its record in the all-time series to 4-2.
