The Drake University women's basketball team fell to Nebraska, 89-68, on Sunday Dec. 19 in Lincoln, Neb. This was the Bulldogs first loss to the Huskers since Dec. 2017 when Drake fell in double-overtime by five.
The Bulldogs struggled to maintain possession against a scrappy Nebraska defense.
Junior forward
Maggie Bair opened scoring for the Bulldogs with a three from the left side of the arc. Junior guard
Megan Meyer added another basket from beyond the arc less than 30 seconds later to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead.
Bair finished with 14 points, six of which came from beyond the arc.
Drake remained on top until Jaz Shelley scored a lay-up to tie the game at 14 a piece with 4:38 left on the clock in the first quarter. The Huskers largest lead of the first half was in the second quarter, when they led by eight with less than a minute left.
Meyer tallied 12 of the Bulldogs first half points, missing only two shots. She led the Bulldogs with 16 points.
Nebraska went on a 7-0 run in the third quarter after the Bulldogs struggled to find the basket.
Head coach
Allison Pohlman said, "Tough day for our squad, but when you have 27 turnovers and they [Nebraska] convert that into 44 points, it's difficult to recover. We need to regroup and shore up a few things before Thursday."
Drake grabbed more defensive rebounds than the Huskers, 26-22, but Nebraska tallied six more offensively than the Bulldogs.
Nebraska was led by guard Ashley Scoggin, who tallied 18 points. Forward Alexis Markowski and Sam Haiby combined for 30 points against the Bulldogs.
Markowski grabbed 10 rebounds and missed only two shots in her 17 minutes on the floor.
Redshirt-junior forward
Grace Berg tallied 11 points for the Bulldogs. She led the team in assists with six and grabbed three rebounds.
Freshman
Anna Miller and graduate
Hannah Fuller led the Bulldogs with five rebounds each.
Drake returns home to Des Moines to take on Minnesota on Thursday Dec. 23.
