Yesufu’s Historic Week Earns MVC Co-Player of the Week Honor

Sophomore guard scored 88 points last week.

After one of the best three-game performances in program history, Drake University sophomore Joseph Yesufu has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday, Feb. 23.

The 6-foot guard from Bolingbrook, Ill., is coming off progressive career highs of 20, 32 and 36 points in three wins last week.

He averaged 29.3 points per game on the week while shooting 64.6 percent from the field and 60.9 percent from three-point range. He opened the week with a then career-high 20 points at UNI followed by a 32-point showing against Evansville. That performance came on 12-of-14 shooing in 26 minutes on the bench.

Monday night, he made his first career start and poured in 36 points while never leaving the court as he replaced his injured mentor at point guard, Roman Penn.

His 36 points are the most scored by an MVC player this season and the 25th most in program history. His back-to-back 30-point games are the first by a Bulldog since the 1988-89 season.

He shared the weekly honor with Missouri State's Gaige Primm who had 29 points and 21 rebounds in the Bears' lone game of the week.

Yesufu leads the Bulldogs into their final regular-season series with a two-game set at Bradley Feb. 26-27.
