Women's Soccer Falls To Indiana State In Season Opener, 1-0

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Drake women's soccer team fell at Indiana State, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in its season opener at Memorial Stadium.

In the first half, the Bulldogs took five shots with three shots on goal, but were unable to get past the Sycamores goalkeeper, Madi Alexander.

"There were long periods today that looked like two excited teams with a big desire to win the game, resulting in a lot of chaos," said head coach Lindsey Horner. "We had momentum at times and had much of the ball, but then we didn't manage our emotions well if we made a mistake."

Two yellow cards were given during the match, Drake's Tori Ubben received one in the 37th minute and Indiana State's Chloee Kooker in the 49th minute.

Both teams went scoreless in the first half. Drake's goalkeeper Kelsie Stone ended up facing 11 shots with four saves. In the 72nd minute, Indiana State's Katie Yankey scored the first and only goal of the game with a high center shot.

The Bulldog's Emma Nagel shot on goal in the 85th minute but was stopped by the Sycamore's Alexander. Drake outshot Indiana State with 11 shots, including six on goal.

Horner said, "Somewhat disappointing to work so hard but not give a great account of ourselves. I look forward to getting better this week and performing and executing at the level we know we are capable of."

Drake takes the pitch again March 5 against the Loyola in Loves Park, Ill. at 2:30 p.m.
