Stone Ties Drake Saves Record in 1-1 Double Overtime Draw At Valpo

VALPARASIO, IND. -- The Drake women's soccer team tied Valparaiso, 1-1, Friday evening thanks to keeper Kelsie Stone matching a school record with 14 saves at Valparaiso.

In the 62nd minute of play, junior Alison Walls scored for the Bulldogs off a penalty kick. Just four minutes later, Valparaiso's Kiley Dugan got the only of 15 shots past Drake (1-2-2) keeper Kelsie Stone to tie the game.

"We were on our heels to start the game, and made some adjustments to sure up our back line and help us keep play in front of us," said head coach Lindsey Horner. "Valpo has some very good players willing to run at us and I was so impressed with Amelia Crabtree and Megan Valenzuela's ability to adjust defensively."

Junior Libby Helverson and senior Hannah Bormann attempted to score after the Valpo goal but were unable to get past keeper VU Nikki Coryell. Helverson and Bormann led Drake offense with five shots each.

At the end of regulation, Valpo (1-1-2) registered 20 shots and 12 on goal compared to Drake who registered 15 shots and six on goal.

In the 94th minute, Valpo was awarded a corner kick and Lindsey Dusatko attempted a header for Valpo to take the lead but Dugan was called for being offsides. Both teams were unable to score, causing a second overtime which neither team was able to score.

Horner said, "The game had stretches when we were on top and stretches where we lost momentum and couldn't sustain possession to get out of or own end, but Kelsie was very steady for us in goal making some very good saves to create a counter or to just let us catch our breath. We will continue to work at turning chances and transitional moments into goals, but we are pleased to earn a point on the road tonight."

In the final minute of the contest, both teams fired off shots, but neither was able to find the net. With 43 seconds left, Stone successfully stopped her 14th shot of the night to preserve the draw.

Valpo outshot the Bulldogs, 24-18. However, just five of Drake's shots were on target.

The Bulldogs return home to take on Missouri State on March 24 in Drake Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
