DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake women's soccer team defeated Evansville, 1-0, Sunday evening at Drake Stadium.
"We had an interesting week with canceled games and rescheduling, but our players started tonight very focused," said Drake head coach
Lindsey Horner. "Our performance was tidy, and we were in complete control to start the game."
In the ninth minute, junior
Alison Walls passed to sophomore Delainey Goertzen. Goertzen found senior
Hannah Bormann who then scored for the Bulldogs. The goal was the seventh of Bormann's career.
Bormann attempted to score three more times in her 90 minutes on the pitch but was unable to get past Evansville goalkeeper Lauren Fischer.
"I'm really pleased with our first half in terms of moments we were patient and switched play, and conversely electing times to transition with speed," Horner said. "We didn't manage the pressure in the second half as well as I'd have liked us to, but once we bypassed midfield and our forwards started to get ahold of the ball, we were able to create some chances and get in the front foot."
The Aces recorded 10 shots and two shots on goal in the match-up. Abby Phelps recorded five shots, four coming late in the second half.
In the 74th minute, Evansville was awarded a free kick due to a foul on Drake sophomore
Chloe Jones. The Aces almost scored, but the sequence was whistled off due to a card on the Evansville bench.
Senior goalkeeper
Kelsie Stone faced 10 shots and saved two to hold off Evansville.
"Overall, we are really pleased to pick up three more points and a shutout at home and carry this momentum into Wednesday against Missouri State," Horner said.
The Bulldogs are now 14-10-1 in their history against the Aces.
Drake returns to Drake Stadium Wednesday, March 31 at 1 p.m. to take on Missouri State.
