Men’s Soccer Falls to Missouri State, 3-2

SPRINGFIELD, MO. -- The Drake men's soccer team fell to Missouri State, 3-2, Monday evening in the second matchup of the season between the two teams.

Less than a minute after kickoff, Istvan Wilhelms found the net to put the Bulldogs (2-2-1) on the board. Missouri State (7-0-0) fired back and Jesus Barea scored just under the three-minute mark to tie the game.

Senior captain Lucas Bartlett attempted two shots and freshman Jaffer Murphy attempted one to try to take back the lead for Drake.

"Similar to Loyola, we started very well with a wonderful strike from distance by Istavan Wilhelms. This should have set the stage for the rest of the half but we didn't manage the lead or the next 15 minutes well enough and allowed Missouri State back into the game through a combination of poor defending and some quality from Missouri State attackers. In key moments, we needed to be better in the individual battles, as well as tracking the ball in and around our box," said head coach Gareth Smith

In the 15th minute, MSU's Nicolo Mulatero scored off an assist from Aadne Bruseth to take the lead. Bruseth's assist marked his second of the evening.

After a number of substitutions, Drake tied the game, 2-2, with a goal from Leo Fuchs. Drake's two goals were the most Missouri State has allowed since Nov. 24, 2019.

Smith said, Offensively, in the first half, we created several decent chances and showed good character and quality to get back to 2-2 going into the half."

The Bears' Mulatero scored for the second time off an assist from Bruseth to get past Drake keeper Jared Brown and take back the lead at the 33-minute mark. Brown saved two shots and faced nine total shots.

The Bulldogs attempted seven shots and four shots on goal compared to the Bears, who attempted nine shots and six shots on goal.

"We invested a lot of effort and energy into the second half performance, but lacked a cutting edge ability to create real goal scoring chances. Although the wind was an influencing factor, we could and should be better with our link up play and final action," said Smith. "We are disappointed with the result because anytime you score two goals at Missouri State, you should get something out of the game. We will get back to training and look to tighten up in a few areas on both sides of the ball, for the game against Evansville later this week."

Drake is now 2-5-2 in their history with Missouri State over the last four seasons.

Drake returns to Des Moines to take on Evansville Friday March 26 at 2 p.m. in Drake Stadium.
