Volleyball To Host Evansville

Bulldogs close out their four-match homestand against the Aces

The Drake University volleyball team is back again in the Knapp Center this weekend  for another Missouri Valley Conference series, this time against Evansville. Evansville will be in Des Moines Sunday and Monday as they will play a match each day. The first serve Sunday will be at 2 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. serve time for the Monday match. Both matches will be available via ESPN3.

The Bulldogs have been in a slight cold spell, losing their last four matches. However, they remain above .500 with a record of 6-5. They lost a pair of matches last weekend to Valparaiso by scores of 3-1 and 3-2, but showed fight on Monday bringing the contest to five sets for the first time of the season. Sophomore Haley Bush set a career-high with 30 kills while hitting .303 in the second Valpo match. Kylee Macke with 33 digs and Kacie Rewerts with a career-high 8 blocks helped defensively while Emily Plock and Jada Wills added ten kills each.

Drake sits in seventh place in the conference with an even 4-4 conference record. The Bulldogs continue to hold their opponents to low hitting percentages, leading the conference by allowing just an .155 opponent hitting percentage. The Bulldogs also own the second place spot for digs in the conference with 19.85 digs per set.

Evansville (3-9, 2-8 MVC) is currently ninth place in the conference. The Purple Aces are also going into the weekend off of a four game losing skid, losing both matches to Missouri State (0-3, 2-3) last week. Melanie Feliziano recorded 25 kills on Monday followed by Alondra Vazquez with 23 kills.

The Bulldogs split the series last year with Evansville, losing the first match 3-1 at home and claiming the victory in the second match 3-2. Darrin McBroom is 9-5 against the Purple Aces in his career at Drake, but has won seven out of the last eight meetings.

The Bulldogs will venture to Terre Haute, Ind. following this weekend to take on Indiana State on March 14-15.
