FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Kansas edged the Drake University softball team, 3-2, Saturday on the final day of the Woo Pig Classic.
Drake (3-10) had the tying run at third base with one out in the top of the seventh after
Macy Johnson's triple down the right field line. But consecutive pop ups by
Haylee Lehman and
Addie Lightner ended the game.
Kansas (7-5) led 3-0 after two innings, scoring its first run in the first and the other two on a two-run home run off
Emma Richards in the second inning.
The Bulldogs broke through in the sixth inning against the Jayhawks. Lehman led off with a double and Lightner and
Delaney Taylor each drew walks loading the bases.
Alexia Lara hit a fielder's choice that led to a KU throwing error that allowed Lehman and Lightner to score and pull within one run at 3-2.
Aubree Beitzinger followed with a fielder's choice but Taylor was thrown out at home trying to score and Hupke flied out to the end the sixth.
Johnson led the offense with two hits and added one stolen base while Lehman and Taylor each had one hit.
Mackenzie Hupke finished the game in relief of Richards and didn't allow a hit in 4.2 innings with one walk and one strikeout. Richards (1-3) took the loss after pitching 1.1 innings and she allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits with two walks.
Drake visits Missouri for the Mizzou Tournament March 12-14. The Bulldogs open the tournament against the Tigers March 12 at 3 p.m.
