The Drake University softball team fell in the series finale to Indiana State, 6-4, in extra innings following a late rally by the Sycamores. Indiana State claimed all three games of the weekend matchup.
Drake opened the scoring in the first inning when
Emily Valtman laced a double into left field to plate
Haylee Lehman and
Libby Ryan. Valtman led the Bulldogs with two hits in five at-bats.
Later in the frame, Makayla Rice doubled to bring home
Addie Lightner as Drake opened up a 3-0 advantage.
Indiana State responded in the second inning with a two-run double off the center field wall to scratch within one.
Drake held its 3-2 lead until the 7
th inning when Indiana State pushed across the tying run thanks to a leadoff double and an RBI single to force extra innings.
The Sycamores kept the momentum rolling in the eighth, waving home three runs to take a commanding lead. The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning but couldn't convert.
Drake (7-25, 2-10 MVC) returns to action with an away game against Iowa State on Tuesday. First pitch in Ames is slated for 4 p.m.
