Women's Tennis Ready To Finish The Regular Season

The Bulldogs will welcome Missouri State Sunday for a match that is vital to the conference standing going into the post-season.

The Drake University women's tennis team finishes the regular season Sunday with a Missouri Valley Conference match against Missouri State. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m. in the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs (8-7, 2-2 MVC) fell to two conference teams on the road this past weekend. They lost Saturday's match 4-3 to Bradley in which all three points were scored in singles competition. On Sunday, Illinois State performed as well if not better than anyone expected on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Bulldogs. From their impressive performance, Illinois State' Tijana Zlatanovic won singles player of the week and doubles player of the week alongside her teammate Tara Damnjanovic. Drake Freshman, Ines Stephani was the Bulldog to win both of her singles matches over the weekend.

Drake fell into fourth place in the MVC after those two conference matches. With a win over MIssouri State the Bulldogs would clinch the third place sport going into post-season conference play.

Missouri State (8-9, 2-1 MVC) is coming off of a 5-2 victory at conference opponent Valparaiso. The Bears managed to win four singles matches along with two of the matches in doubles competition. They will visit UNI on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match before making their way to Drake for Missouri State's last match of the season. The Bulldogs played the Bears twice in the 2018-19 season, once in the regular season and once in the conference tournament, losing both, 4-3. However, Drake has won five of the last nine meetings.

Following Sunday, the Bulldogs will begin to prepare for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament which will be held on Apr. 23-25 in Springfield, Mo.
