Akinwole Joins Men’s Basketball Team

Bulldogs add graduate transfer from Omaha for the 2021-22 season

DES MOINES, Iowa – Ayo Akinwole, a 6-foot guard, has joined the Drake University men's basketball team, head coach Darian DeVries announced Friday, April 23.

Akinwole is a graduate transfer who played the last four seasons at Omaha. Last season, he averaged 13.0 points per game while leading the Mavericks in assists at 2.9 per game. He also made 45.6 percent of his shots behind the three-point arc while starting all 25 games.

"We are extremely excited about Ayo joining our program," DeVries said. "Ayo's veteran work ethic, character and leadership will fit great with the guys on our team. On the court, Ayo will bring a wealth of experience as a high-level guard who can make plays for himself and create for others while having the ability to make shots on the perimeter. We are looking forward to Ayo joining the Drake Bulldog family!"

He scored 25 or more points three times last season, including a career-best 32 at Denver when he hit 6-of-8 three-point shots.

Akinwole is a native of Papillion, Neb., and graduate of Papillion-La Vista where he was a two-time All-Nebraska selection and captain of the Omaha World-Herald's All-Nebraska team.
