Women’s Soccer Falls to UNI in Season Finale

WATERLOO, Iowa – The Drake women's soccer team lost at in-state rival UNI, 1-0, Thursday night in its final game of the 2021 spring season.

In the 27th minute of play, UNI's Lauren Heinsch scored for the Panthers to take the early lead over the Bulldogs.

In the 33rd minute, junior Alison Walls attempted a shot into the upper left corner but was unable to get past UNI keeper Caitlin Richards. Walls tallied one shot and one shot on goal in her 90 minutes on the pitch.

Sophomore Chloe Jones also attempted to tie the match in the first half but was unsuccessful.

"Tonight in a way summarized our season. We had two more injuries impact our lineup. Their goal came from a collection of mistakes instead of making UNI work really hard to score," said head coach Lindsey Horner. "Then we had three moments in their six in the second half where it's a bit unbelievable that we didn't score."

Drake (2-4-2) had five players put a shot on goal, but none were able to get past Richards.

UNI (4-4-2) recorded four shots and two shots on goal in the match up.

Horner said, "There was a sense of belief and matching work rate to change the game, but a stinging end to a frustrating season. Overall our players were a joy to go through the stresses of a COVID year with, but not the end of the careers for Hannah Bormann, Sam Nosler, and Abby Stephenson that we would have hoped for."

UNI's win broke the Bulldogs' two-match winning streak in the series as Drake still leads the Panthers, 11-3-4 in the all-time series.
