DeVries Named Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year

Drake University incoming freshman Tucker DeVries has been named the Gatorade Iowa Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

The honor is the latest for DeVries, who was earlier named Iowa's Mr. Basketball after leading Waukee High School to a State Championship.

In three seasons at Waukee, DeVries scored 1,092 points with 430 rebounds, 268 assists and 121 steals in those three seasons. He also set the school's single-season scoring record with 554 points his junior season.

As a senior, DeVries averaged 18.5 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.9 steals per game while also shooting more than 50 percent from the field and 43.7 percent from beyond the three-point arc.

DeVries is the first incoming Bulldog to earn the honor, but joins current Drake assistant coach Matt Gatens who was the 2008 winner of the award. Earlier this week, DeVries' classmate and fellow Drake freshman Katie Dinnebier was named the Iowa Girls Gatorade Player of the Year.
