The Drake women's soccer team beat Kansas City, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Drake Stadium for the team's fourth-straight home victory. The team also recognized faculty and staff of the University prior to kickoff as part of Faculty & Staff Day.
The two teams split possession through out the match and both teams recorded most of their possession time in midfield.
The Bulldogs recorded three shots in the first half, but none found the net behind Kansas City keeper Mackenzie Caldwell.
"This afternoon wasn't the prettiest of performances, but we started to look dangerous in the second half by being more dynamic in front of the ball," said Drake head coach
Lindsey Horner. "Again, we are thrilled to start the weekend with two set piece goals and a shutout. Our team was so pleased to have so many faculty and staff members join us today. They're a part of why Drake is a special place to be a student-athlete."
In the 52nd minute, junior
Delaney Goertzen took a free kick and put the ball into the box where sophomore
Emma Nagel headed the ball into goal, putting Drake up 1-0.
Kansas City tried to score a few minutes later, but was unsuccessful.
The Bulldogs outshot the Roos 9-7, but the Roos received eight corner kicks compared to Drake's four.
In the 79th minute, Drake received a corner kick that landed in the box from
Libby Helverson. The ball bounced off the shoulder of a Kansas City player for an own goal that put the Bulldogs up, 2-0.
MVC Offensive Player of the Week and senior
Libby Helverson registered one shot on goal in her 49 minutes on the pitch. Freshman and MVC Newcomer of the week
Makenna Shepard recorded one shot and one shot on goal. She crafted a scoring opportunity in the first half, but was stopped by the Kansas City defense.
MVC Defensive Player of the Week and keeper
Kelsie Stone faced nine shots and recorded two saves in her 90 minutes in goal.
Horner said, "This result sets us up nicely for a good senior day performance and to maintain this momentum prior to MVC play."
The Bulldogs return to action Sunday Sept. 19 for Senior Day against Western Illinois.
