The Drake University men's tennis team opened its 2021-22 season by winning five flights at the Drake Invite Sept. 17-18 at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. The Bulldogs claimed three singles flight wins and two in doubles competition.
 
Overall, the team claimed a total of 27 wins in their matches.
 
In singles action, Matija Matic won Flight D with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Marquette's Ian Brady followed by a 6-0, 6-3 win against Gustavus Adolphus' Caleb Fridinger. He returned to the court Sunday morning to pick up a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Omaha's Hugo Piles to claim the flight title.
 
Newcomer Olle Sonesson Lidholt took the Flight E title with three victories starting with a 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 win over Vinicius Rodrigues followed by a 4-6, 6-0, 10-4 triumph over Gustavus Adolphus' Marco Siviero. He claimed the final victory over Omaha's Alvaro Quintana, 6-3, 6-0.
 
Markus Bolin won Flight C with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Gustavus Adolphus' Alex Budde followed by a 7-5, 6-1 win over Omaha's Davis Lawley. Sunday morning, he advanced as his scheduled opponent, Fabien Calloud of Northwest Missouri State withdrew due to injury.
 
Bolin and Matic also combined to win the C Flight of doubles action with wins of 8-4, 8-4 and 8-6. Oliver Johansson and newcomer Jeremy Schifris also won their doubles flight with wins of 8-4, 8-4 and 8-5.
 
Johansson and Gabriel Sardo also advanced to the championship match of their respective brackets but were upended in the title match.
 
The Bulldogs continue their season next weekend, Sept. 24-26, at the Creighton Invite.
