WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men's golf team is in third place after day one of its annual Zach Johnson Invitational at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines, Iowa. Drake (570-291-279) trails team leader, North Dakota State (567-285-282) by just three strokes. The Bison lead by two over Loyola (569-284-285).
"It was a perfect day for golf," said head coach
Matt Lewis. "By far the best weather we have had for this event. The course was in spectacular shape and was a great test."
Tim Lim and
Nick Pittman lead the Bulldogs as the duo is tied for 10
th at 142. Lim fired a pair of 71s while Pittman shaved eight strokes off his first round with an impressive 67 in the afternoon. He carded four birdies and one eagle in the second round.
Zac Jenkins is tied for 16
th at 144 while
Shayne Patel is just behind at 145.
Jack Dumas is tied for 33
rd at 147.
"I am proud of how the team played today," Lewis said. "I was very impressed how the guys did in our second round. It was a long day in hot temperatures so to be able shoot -5 under par was huge."
Matthis Besard of Southern Ilinois is the overall leader at 134, two strokes better than Caleb VanArragon of Valparaiso.
Playing as individuals,
Lucas Scherf is tied for sixth at 140, including a 2-under opening round of 69.
Nikko Ganas is tied for 51
st at 151 while
Silvester Tan is tied for 76
th at 156.
The tournament concludes Tuesday with a 9 a.m. shotgun.
"We put ourselves in a great position going into tomorrow," Lewis said. "We are excited to have another great day."
