The Drake University women's soccer team went into double overtime against Indiana State and ended in a 1-1 draw Wednesday evening.
The Sycamores took the early lead when Sasha Thompson scored a break away goal in the ninth minute, putting Indiana State up 1-0.
"It wasn't a great start to the game, but we started to kick on late in the first half. I thought our ideas and how we tried to play were very good at times, our timing and our execution just needs to be better," said head coach
Lindsey Horner.
Senior
Libby Helverson attempted to craft a scoring opportunity for the Bulldogs in retaliation, but her shot was blocked by an Indiana State defender.
The Bulldogs out-shot the Sycamores 24-15 and maintained possession most of the match.
Indiana State was called for a foul inside the box in the 68th minute that allowed Drake to take a penalty kick.
Meghan Brown drew the foul that allowed the penalty. Sophomore
Emma Nagel took the shot for the Bulldogs and scored to tie the match 1-1.
Nagel's penalty kick goal was her third goal this season and her first off a penalty kick.
The final 20 minutes of regulation was full of shots being taken by both teams, but neither being able to find the net or get past the opposing teams defenders.
In the first overtime, sophomore
Lily Overstreet recorded the first shot taken by either team. Her shot was saved by Sycamore keeper Maddie Alexander.
Celeste Wahlberg attempted a shot shortly after for Indiana State, but was stopped by Drake keeper
Kelsie Stone.
Stone ended the match with six saves after facing 15 shots.
Both teams went scoreless in both periods of overtime, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.
Horner said, "There's a lot of trust among our back six and I thought they handled Celeste Wahlberg late in the game tremendously. Being undefeated in the league is something we need to build momentum from as we head into Sunday."
Drake returns to the pitch Sunday Oct. 3 to take on Loyola at 4 p.m. at Drake Stadium.
