IOWA CITY, Iowa – A pair of underclassmen led the Drake University cross country teams in their season opener Friday evening at the Hawkeye Invitational.
Enzo Marie, a freshman from France, finished third in the men's race with a time of 18:22.8 on the 6-kilometer course. He was leading the pack at the midway point but finished just 1.4 seconds behind the winner, Iowa Central's Kelvin Bungel.
Marie's performance helped the Bulldogs finish fourth in the nine-team field. He trailed by teammate
Jack Zettl in 11
th (18:55.4) and
Sam King in 15
th (19:08.3).
Chris Pahnke and
Conner Riley also made their Drake debuts as transfer student-athletes and finished 38
th and 47
th, respectively.
Brooke Mullins, the reigning Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, led Drake's women's team with a fifth-place finish. Mullins navigated the 4-kilometer women's course in 14:09.44. Freshman
Emilie Meyer was the Bulldogs' next finisher in 36
th in 14:55.74.
The Drake women finished ninth in the 11-team field. Iowa State claimed the top women's spot while Iowa's men's team successfully defended its home course.
More Bulldogs are set to open their season Saturday at the John Kurtt Invite hosted by Wartburg College.
