The Drake University men's soccer team picked up its second-straight win with a 2-1 victory over Omaha Friday evening at the Cownie Soccer Stadium.
Drake (2-1-0) scored a pair of first half goals and held Omaha (0-3-0) scoreless for nearly 89 minutes.
The Bulldogs outshot the Mavericks, 12-9, and had five shots on goal. Three of those shots came from
Juan Louis. However, it was
Jaden Stevenson and
Jaffer Murphy who found the back of the net. Both goals were assisted by passed from
Louis Yuill from the right wing.
"Tonight was a very high level and complete performance in all phases of the game. We were excellent for long periods against a very good UNO who were in the NCAA tournament only a few months ago. We started exceptionally well with great intensity and intentionality," said head coach
Gareth Smith. "We were very good in our positional structure and dominated possession which resulted in two excellent first half goals. Delighted to see Jaden and Jaffer open their scoring account for the season and be rewarded for their effort."
Stevenson scored in the fifth minute when his right foot perfectly struck Yuill's cross into the right corner of the net.
Murphy put the Bulldogs up 2-0 in the 34
th minute on a nearly identical play as he headed Yuill's cross into the box past the keeper. Murphy's score came five minutes after he entered the match.
Drake keeper
Jared Brown finished with two saves and nearly had a clean sheet until Omaha's Malik Elmi found space in front of the goal and headed home a pass from Stevie Siy in the 89
th minute. The shot was Elmi's third of the game off the bench.
Smith said, "I was most pleased with our game management and overall organizational structure both in and out of possession. Everyone put in a real shift tonight and executed their roles and responsibilities at a very high level, which allowed us to create more chances while limiting UNO to a few opportunities. "
The Bulldogs put their two-match win streak on the line Monday afternoon at St. Thomas. Kickoff against the Tommies is set for 4 p.m.
